JPJ Finalising Steps For B-Full Licence Upgrade
Road Transport Department (JPJ) Director General Aedy Fadly Ramli recently announced that his department is in the midst of finalising the steps for Malaysian Driving License (LMM) holders with class B1 or B2 licence to upgrade to a class B-full licence for high-powered motorcycles.
This is in line with Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook announcement that a special transition program will be created allowing those with an active B1 or B2 class licence for at least ten years to transition to B-full.
The program, set to begin on Oct 1, will have certain requirements where B1 or B2 licence holders must complete a two-hour classroom training and pass a practical test at a driving institute on a 500cc motorcycle.
Additionally, participants must also have held either a class B1 or B2 licence for a minimum of 10 years and be free from any summonses or blacklistings.
The main attraction of this program is the significant savings in both time and money. Participants are only required to pay RM160, a substantial reduction from the previous RM900, which also required two hours of theory class and 9.5 hours of circuit training.
The idea of an automatic upgrade from a B2 licence to a B-full was first proposed by Deputy Prime Minister YAB Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Zahid suggested that after a certain number of years, B2 licence holders should automatically receive a B Full licence, arguing that by then, riders would have gained sufficient experience on the road.
