Loke: Govt. Is Prioritising EV Ecosystem Development

At the launch of Careplus Mall and Assembly Plant in Chembong, Negeri Sembilan earlier today, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the government will prioritise the development of a robust and well-supported ecosystem to ensure the smooth and sustainable growth of Malaysia's electric vehicle (EV) industry.
Loke acknowledged that EV adoption in the country is still in its early stages, with many people hesitant to switch from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. He noted that potential EV buyers are aware of the challenges associated with owning an EV, such as the limited availability of charging stations and the higher purchase price.

However, he assured that the government is actively addressing these concerns. Efforts are being made to collaborate with the private sector to expand and simplify the network of charging stations. Additionally, clear guidelines will be provided by the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) to support this transition.
“This is a significant issue, which is why the government is focused on ensuring that the EV ecosystem is comprehensive,” Loke stated. He also highlighted the recent reduction in EV Road Tax rates and mentioned that petrol stations are being transformed into charging hubs.

Loke further elaborated that the government's support for local automotive companies entering the EV sector goes beyond just establishing sufficient charging infrastructure. It also includes developing skilled human resources in the automotive field.
“We need skilled professionals in the automotive industry, particularly for EVs. Beyond assembly, we need experts in EV repairs, especially in areas like battery maintenance, mechanical components, and battery disposal. All of this requires meticulous planning,” he explained, expressing confidence in the market potential of EVs in Malaysia’s future.

Additionally, Loke mentioned that the government would soon release more defined policies regarding the use of trucks. These policies aim to encourage private sector investment, particularly among logistics and transportation companies, in purchasing new trucks.
