Waymo’s Sixth-Generation Autonomous Fleet Has Fewer Sensors To Lower Costs
A more effective sensor arrangement was featured in Alphabet-owned Waymo's sixth-generation Driver system, which was unveiled on Monday. According to reports, the self-driving ride's new configuration maintains safety standards even with fewer cameras and LiDAR sensors than the existing platform. The current generation lineup will coexist with it once it's prepared for public rides.
According to CNBC, the new system is built into the Geely Zeekr electric vehicles. Waymo first stated that it would collaborate with the Chinese EV manufacturer in late 2021. The new platform's rides are boxier than the current generation lineup, which is based on Jaguar I-PACE SUVs. The sixth-generation fleet built by Zeekr is said to be more accessible, with a lower step, higher ceiling, and more legroom, while maintaining roughly the same overall footprint as the Jaguar-based lineup.
The sixth-generation Waymo Driver has four LiDAR sensors instead of five, and it has 13 cameras instead of 29. According to Alphabet, their combined overlapping fields of vision and safety-focused redundancies enable them to function more effectively in a range of weather circumstances. The new platform's field of view, according to the company, can cover up to 500 meters (1,640 feet) in both day and nighttime conditions and "a range of" meteorological conditions.
The company claims that because of "regular road trips to newer cities," the sixth-generation Driver operates dependably even in intense heat, fog, rain, and hail. That makes sense, since all of the cities that are currently authorized are located in comparatively dry and clear climates. At the moment, Waymo only works in Austin, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The company's fleet provides about 50,000 paid autonomous trips every week since its launch in 2018.
Waymo stated that the younger generation has driven for thousands of miles in real life and for millions more in simulations. Because it has learned from the system's shared knowledge from its previous generations, the company anticipates that it will be ready for consumers roughly half the time sooner than previous models.
