Tesla’s First Highway Supercharging at Skudai RnR “Coming Soon” - V4 250 kW

“Our requirements to Tesla include the installation of at least 50 super chargers within 3 years and at least 30% of these must be usable by other brands as well.” - said Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz, Minister of Investment Trade and Industry.

These were the his words from a tweet shared back in April 2023 as part the conditions set by the Malaysian government via the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Global Leaders programme, which runs from Jan 1, 2023 to Dec 31, 2025. It was these conditions in which Tesla was able to set up shop in Malaysia without any local partner and a slew of tax exemptions.

Fast forward to today, and Tesla has exceeded expectations, having established 12 Supercharging stations with 56 chargers and 13 Destination Charging stations with 69 destination chargers across Malaysia. However, the remaining requirement — making 30% of the superchargers open to other EV brands — still needs to be fulfilled by the end of 2025.

One major criticism of Tesla’s Supercharger network in Malaysia has been the choice of locations. Most of the chargers are situated in malls and city-centre car parks rather than along the highways where long-distance travellers need them most.

However, this is about to change with the imminent launch of a Tesla Supercharging station at Skudai RnR (Southbound). Conveniently positioned between Starbucks and Family Mart, this marks Tesla’s first Supercharger to be setup on the country’s national highway network.

The Skudai RnR has recently emerged as a hotspot for EV charging, currently hosting five EV charging stations. However, Johor Premium Outlet (JPO) just a few KMs before Skudai RnR boasts the region's highest output with a 400 kW DC fast charger.

During our visit to the site, the setup appeared almost complete, with only the signage, parking lines, and final approvals from the Energy Commission (ST) pending. Given that Skudai RnR's electrical grid was designed with EV charging in mind, the station should go live within the next month or so.

This new facility will feature four V4 Superchargers, capable of delivering up to 250 kW of power, similar to Tesla’s other charging stations in Malaysia, at a rate of RM1.25/kWh. Unlike city-centre locations, there will be no destination chargers here—an appropriate decision given that highways are intended for quick stops rather than extended stays.

Once operational, this Supercharging station will likely be the first of many on Malaysia’s highways, responding to Tesla owners' requests for more convenient long-distance charging options.
