Tesla Partners Samsung for SmartThings Energy Integration

Tesla partners with Samsung to adopt its SmartThings Energy platform to manage energy for smart homes.
Samsung Electronics has announced a new partnership with American tech giant and EV marque Tesla to establish a new service integration. Set to be showcased at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 in Las Vegas, US, this week, this partnership will see Samsung’s SmartThings Energy platform integrated into several Tesla products.
This integration is made possible by Tesla's decision to launch an official Application Programming Interface (API) for its products, which allows for collaboration and integration from other third parties.

The main benefit from this partnership is that it allows Samsung’s SmartThings Energy platform to connect with several Tesla products like the Tesla Powerwall, Solar Inverter, Wall Connector charger, as well as their EV fleet. Consumers can now get live feeds on the energy production, storage, and usage of their Tesla products via any Samsung devices connected to the platform.
Additionally, the SmartThing Energy platform can also sync with Tesla Powerwall’s ‘Storm Watch’ function, which alerts consumers of any impending extreme weather events that can cause power disruptions like snow storms and typhoons. Once both platforms are synced, users can be alerted through SmartThings on their connected devices, where they can also activate the AI Energy Mode to extend the remaining backup energy stored in their Tesla Powerwall.
“Tesla Energy’s customers can now manage and monitor the power status of their homes through SmartThings Energy and Samsung devices in addition to the Tesla app, ensuring more access and connectivity,” said Chanwoo Park, executive VP and head of the IoT development team of the device platform centre at Samsung Electronics.
Commenting on the firm’s recent partnership with Samsung, Tesla senior VP of powertrain and energy engineering Drew Baglino said, “At Tesla, we are excited to add capability to our products to interact with other intelligent devices and software in customers’ homes.”
“We are pleased that Samsung has chosen to be an early developer, given their leading position in consumer smart home technology,” the senior VP added.

SmartThings Energy connected to the Tesla Powerwall will be first shown at the Samsung booth at CES 2024. With the actual service still under development, the firm is targeting to launch this new integration later in the second quarter of 2024.
In Malaysia, however, all of Tesla's energy products, like the Solar Roof and Powerwall, are not yet available for purchase, though you can find all of them listed on their official webpage. With these products set to be made available some time in the future, perhaps we can expect them to get this new Samsung’s SmartThings Energy integration much later.
