BYD Surpasses Tesla in Global Battery Electric Vehicle Sales

BYD has surpassed Tesla in its global battery EV sales, with more than 1.6 million BEVs sold as of Q3 2025.
China’s BYD has now surpassed Tesla in its global pure battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales. As of Q3 this year, the Chinese NEV giant’s cumulative BEV global sales have reached more than 1.6 million units, thus giving them a decisive lead of almost 400,000 units over Tesla, who only shipped 1.2 million BEVs in the same period.

In Q3 2025 alone, BYD has delivered a total of 582,500 BEVs, which represents a slight quarter-on-quarter decrease of 4%, but at the same time a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 31.4%. Tesla, on the other hand, has delivered 497,100 units in the same period, showing a 29.4% quarter-to-quarter growth and 7.4% YoY.
Since overtaking Tesla in Q4 2024, BYD has managed to maintain its BEV sales lead for four consecutive quarters. The first time BYD overtook Tesla in their own game was back in Q4 2023, before experiencing a sharp decline in the next quarter.

With its positive Q3 2025 sales number, researchers at Counterpoint Research project BYD will finish 2025 as the global BEV sales leader with a 15.7% market share, thus cementing its position not only as the world’s largest new energy vehicle brand but also for BEVs in particular.

In separate news, BYD has also completed its carrier fleet with a total of eight vessels that combine to boast an annual transport capacity of over 1 million vehicles. The final carrier to join its fleet was the BYD Jinan, which went into its first operation last week.

What’s more impressive is that BYD has managed to complete its carrier fleet in under two years, with its first vessel, the BYD Explorer No. 1, delivered back in Jan 2024. All the carriers in its fleet are RoRo ships, where the vehicles can roll on and off the ship by themselves, and depending on the type of vessel, each of them has a capacity ranging from 7,200 to 9,000 cars.

The BYD carrier fleet list includes the aforementioned BYD Explorer No.1, BYD Hefei, BYD Changzhou, BYD Shenzhen, BYD Xi’an, BYD Changsha, BYD Zhengzhou, which recently made its maiden voyage to Malaysia, and the latest fleet, the BYD Jinan.
