Honda 0-Series Next-Gen Tech Unveiled At 0 Tech Meeting 2024
Honda hosted the "Honda 0 Tech Meeting 2024," unveiling cutting-edge technologies set to feature in their upcoming Honda 0 Series EVs.
Scheduled for a global launch in 2026, the 0-Series represents Honda's new approach to EV development, emphasising on the principles - "Thin, Light, and Wise".
1. Thin and Light Design Approach
Honda is committed to creating vehicles with slim profiles and minimalistic designs while maximising interior space. This approach is embodied in its innovative "Man Maximum, Machine Minimum" concept, combining an elegant low-height design with a lightweight structure. To achieve this, Honda has developed a new EV platform using 2.0 GPa grade ultra-high-strength steel, enhancing both vehicle safety and sportiness.
2. Compact e-Axle and Thin Battery Packs
Leveraging its hybrid-electric vehicle expertise, Honda has developed a compact and highly efficient e-Axle, reducing the size of the inverter by 40% allowing for a low-centre-of-gravity layout. This is coupled with a thinner battery pack, made possible by new production technologies like Megacasting and 3D friction stir welding, provides longer driving ranges and extended battery life.
3. Aerodynamics and Body Rigidity
Honda’s active aerodynamic system reduces air resistance, improving energy efficiency and vehicle stability. Furthermore, a new body rigidity management system enhances driving stability by optimising load distribution across the tires during cornering all while reducing the vehicle’s overall weight by 100KG.
Additionally, Production Technologies Honda’s advanced manufacturing processes, such as the use of a 6,000-ton Megacasting machine, aids in reducing the number of parts needed for battery case assembly. Innovations like CDC joining technology also enable the use of lightweight materials, reducing the vehicle’s frame weight without compromising safety.
Meanwhile all technological matters are dealt with via the Wise Development Approach which touches on;
1. Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs)
Honda’s focus on intelligent vehicle systems is highlighted by the development of original vehicle operating systems (OS) for its EVs with continuous OTA updates.
2. Automated Driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (AD/ADAS)
Building on its Level 3 automated driving technologies, Honda aims to expand driver assistance features in the 0-Series, offering greater safety and convenience.
3. Driving Experience
While focusing on automation, Honda is also prioritising the joy of driving, offering sporty, exhilarating experiences through the integration of by-wire control systems.
The company is further committed to enhance energy efficiency with innovations like thermal management systems and human-centric heating solutions, delivering an estimated 480KM range per charge. While on the user experience side, offer personalised, stress-free in-vehicle interactions, entertainment, and virtual experiences through its XR technology.
The Honda 0-Series marks a major leap forward in EV development for this Japanese automotive giant who has somewhat been lagging behind the Chinese automakers.
With seven models planned for release by 2030, Honda’s next-generation EVs are set to hopefully redefine driving experience and place Honda back in the forefront of automotive development.
