The Ministry of Transport anticipates that the redevelopment of KL Sentral station will begin early next year.

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) anticipates that the redevelopment work for the Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station (KL Sentral) is slated to commence in early 2025, Bernama reports.

According to its minister, YB Anthony Loke, the terms and conditions for the Public-Private partnership (PPP) redevelopment project are still under negotiation between the government’s Public-Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) and the developer, Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB).

“We must finalise the agreement first before we can start the construction. So we hope that the negotiation can be completed within this year, in the next two or three months, and hopefully, the project can begin by early next year,” Loke said to Bernama during the MOT press conference earlier today.

“With PPP, the entire cost will be borne by the developer. In return, the developer will receive the air rights, which allows them to construct a building on top of the station, creating a mixed-use development,” the MOT minister added.

The minister was asked to comment on the progress of the KL Sentral redevelopment project, which was previously reported to begin in late 2024. Aside from that, Loke also made an assurance that the upcoming redevelopment project won’t interfere with the KL Sentral’s daily operations and public transport services such as LRT, KTM, and ETS.

The KL Sentral redevelopment project was billed by the government last year in a bid to address the increasing congestion of commuters and vehicles around the central station. The whole redevelopment project is estimated to cost around RM 1 billion, which will be borne by the developer as part of the aforementioned deal with the PPP.
