With Malaysia enforcing the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) requirement for Singapore registered vehicles starting Oct 1, businesses offering assistance to Singaporean motorists to help apply for the VEP are rising in demand.

These services help drivers avoid the long queues and technical challenges that have plagued the application process. The service providers will help register permits online, update personal details, deregister old permits, as well as collect and install RFID tags at collection centres in Johor and Singapore.

The cost of these “skip the queue” services ranges from SGD25 (RM82) to SGD168 (RM553), a significant premium over the SGD12.20 (RM40) fee that LEVIED ON drivers if they completed the process themselves via Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) website.

JPJ has clarified that representatives are allowed to handle VEP registrations, provided the information submitted is accurate.

While the permit is mandatory for all Singaporean motorists crossing into Malaysia at the Causeway and Second Link, delays and technical issues have resulted in long wait times at collection centres. In view of these issues, the Malaysian government granted some leeway, allowing cars without a VEP to enter Johor for now, but issuing written warnings to those who have yet to apply.

The VEP system enables Malaysian authorities to track traffic offences and outstanding summonses for foreign-registered vehicles, ensuring better regulation and enforcement.
