149 Drunk Driving Accident Cases Prosecuted in Court Since 2021

A total of 149 cases involving drunk driving accidents have been brought to court between Jan 2021 and Sept 2024, revealed Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

These cases, prosecuted under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987, involve incidents where drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs caused injury or death. Under this act, offenders face stringent penalties, including imprisonment of up to 15 years, with a minimum sentence of 10 years. Additionally, they may be fined between RM50,000 and RM100,000.

For cases resulting in injuries, convicted individuals can be jailed for seven to 10 years and fined between RM30,000 and RM50,000.

Speaking on the matter, Saifuddin emphasised the role of the police in ensuring justice in such cases. “The police are responsible for enforcing traffic laws and conducting investigations with transparency and fairness to all parties involved. This ensures victims and their heirs receive appropriate consideration while the guilty party is brought to court,” he said.

Saifuddin further reiterated the government’s commitment in addressing the issue of drunk driving and these charges reflect the ongoing efforts to curb dangerous driving practices and provide justice to victims and their families.
