PETRA & TNB To Strengthen National Electricity Grid To Support EV Charging Network
-full_normal.jpg)
Deputy PM and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister (PETRA), Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, announced recently during a Dewan Rakyat session regarding the 2025 Supply Bill debate that PETRA will continue to enhance and expand Malaysia's national electricity grid to meet growing energy needs, including supporting the electric vehicle (EV) charging network.
Fadillah also emphasised that Tenaga Nasional Bhd's (TNB) capital spending plan already includes grid strengthening under the Incentive Based Regulation (IBR) mechanism. He reiterated PETRA's dedication to supporting government initiatives aimed at hastening Malaysia's adoption of EVs.

He added that in order to support the growth of EV charging infrastructure and encourage widespread EV use, PETRA, the Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry (MITI), and the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry have put policies and programs in place.
He also noted that there are already 3,171 EV charging points nationwide and public safety is always the top priority. The Energy Commission (ST), which is part of PETRA, is in charge of regulating the safety of EV charging sites and equipment.

Achieving Malaysia’s goal of a greener energy sector - with renewable energy making up 70% of the capacity by 2050 - will require joint efforts from various stakeholders. PETRA will consider proposals for improving green electricity programmes but will assess their suitability, technical feasibility, and cost-effectiveness before implementation.
Furthermore, in line with maintaining a reliable, sustainable, and affordable power supply the government is planning for future energy sources to secure Malaysia's energy supply beyond the current green electricity initiatives. Malaysia has also stopped development of new coal-fired power plants in support of the nation’s commitment to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
