Weekend Marred By Viral Lorry And Trailer Accidents
Over the recent weekend, both social media and local news outlets were abuzzed by two incidents involving heavy vehicles, namely lorries and trailers. In fact, one proved tragically fatal too.
Firstly, a motorcyclist was killed on Saturday, Nov 23, along Jalan Kerinchi (Bangsar South) when he was struck and subsequent run over by a runaway lorry that suddenly reversed out of an active construction site along said route.
CCTV footage showed the 32-year-old rider on a Modenas Kriss trying to evade the out of control lorry, but it proved futile. The ensuing collision threw the rider underneath the lorry’s tyres and killed him at the scene.
Before coming to an eventual halt, the runaway reversing lorry continued reversing out of control into the opposite lane and hit an oncoming car, causing minor injuries to its driver in the process too.
Following which, police detained the 32-year-old lorry driver, and their initial investigations revealed that said driver was in the midst of refilling brake fluid in the offending vehicle before it suddenly reversed, smashing through the build site’s security gate.
Secondly, a dashcam footage went viral on social media showing an equally dramatic scene involving a trailer on the Jalan Duta-bound stretch of the NKVE. Based on the timestamp of the dashcam video, this incident took place on Thursday, Nov 21.
In the video, we can see a cargo trailer get detached from the prime mover that was initially tugging it. The detachment subsequently saw the trailer coming loose and veer off-course into the right line, narrowly missing several vehicles before it was halted by the highway’s armco divider.
Whilst there were no fatalities or injuries reported from this incident, it’s not wrong to assume that things could’ve fared our much worse. Local news reports indicate that police have also begun investigating this incident and that a statement from the trailer driver has been recorded.
While these two incidents may appear isolated, they do add to a recent string of incidents involving heavy vehicles reported around the country of late. This then begs us to ponder and question if efforts by responsible enforcers and agencies are actually indeed enough.
Well, what are your thoughts on the matter folks? Share your takes in the comments below, as well as our social media pages…
