BYD’s Secret to Success: A Million-Strong Workforce

BYD’s rapid ascent to global prominence has been nothing short of extraordinary. During the recent China Innovation and Technology Festival, BYD chairman and founder Wang Chuanfu highlighted its workforce as the driving factor behind the company’s remarkable growth.
BYD now employs nearly one million people, supported by 11 major research institutes and 110,000 engineers, making it the largest R&D workforce globally. BYD also claims to have been filing 32 patents on average every working day.

Since 2011, the number of engineers at BYD has grown from over 20,000 to nearly 110,000 while its workforce grew from 280,000 employees in 2021 to 570,000 in 2022, and reaching close to a million by 2024.

BYD’s investment in talent development is equally impressive. Over the past three years, the company has recruited more than 50,000 fresh college graduates, with 70% of the hires this year holding Master’s or Doctoral degrees. Nearly 80% of these recruits are focused on R&D reflecting BYD’s strategic focus on technological leadership.
Many of BYD’s senior executives, including He Zhiqi, Chief Operating Officer of the Passenger Vehicle Business Group, and Yang Dongsheng, Senior Vice President, started their careers as fresh graduates, exemplifying the company’s commitment to nurturing talent from within.

This focus on innovation and talent has driven BYD’s dominance in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market. In the first 11 months of 2024, BYD sold 3.76 million NEVs, representing a 40.02% increase over the same period in the previous year.
Additionally, its leadership in EV battery technology further strengthens its position after having installed 16.87 GWh of it in Nov alone and a cumulative total of 117.54 GWh in 2024.
BYD had also recorded an annual sales of 4.27 million vehicles in 2024, surpassing its original target of 3.6 million units. Wang attributed this success to BYD’s unwavering focus on innovation, significant investment in R&D and the cultivation of a highly skilled workforce enabling it to scale up rapidly.
