Heavy Vehicles Contribute To Rise In Fatal Crashes - PDRM
In light of yesterday's tragic accident at KM 204 of the North-South Expressway northbound that was said to be caused by a loose lorry tyre that landed in the middle lane, Federal Police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri revealed that 825 lorries were involved in fatal accidents in the first ten months of the year.
According to Yusri, there were an average of three lorries involved in accidents every day, which resulted in 5,364 fatalities as opposed to 6,024 in 2023. He also mentioned that incidents involving heavy vehicles accounted for a portion of the 17,905 cars involved in fatal accidents between January and October.
“Of this total, 15,402 involved cars, followed by motorcycles (1,040), four-wheel drives (619) and pedestrians (19),” he told Sinar.
Yusri added that during 4,822 operations nationally between January and September, 38,367 traffic summonses were issued to commercial vehicles for a variety of offences.
“We also impounded 177 commercial vehicles and noted the increase in accidents involving heavy vehicles recently,” he said.

The federal JSPT director stated that light trucks, trailers, and container lorries are the main causes of accidents involving commercial vehicles. He also urged drivers of heavy vehicles that had broken down to provide sufficient visual warnings to other drivers.
Additionally, Yusri asked employers and commercial vehicle operators to perform comprehensive examinations to guarantee the abilities, readiness, and health of their drivers.
