Toyota Hilux Rangga Gains New Three-Row SUV Variant
The Toyota Hilux Rangga gets a new three-row SUV bodystyle in Indonesia, set to be launched later in early 2025.
Since its debut back in 2023, the cutesy yet capable Toyota Hilux Rangga (also known as the Hilux Champ in Thailand) is known for its versatility, offering both business and private owners limitless customisation options. Hence, it comes as no surprise that Toyota Astra Motor Indonesia (TAM) has decided to give this compact pick-up truck a new bodystyle variant, featuring a three-row, seven-seater layout.
Christened as the Hilux Rangga SUV, this three-row compact SUV is a result of Toyota Astra Motor’s partnership with an Indonesian-based firm, New Armada, which is known for manufacturing bodyworks for buses and commercial vehicles. However, TAM insisted that the Hilux Rangga SUV will be sold as a full-fledged vehicle for both passengers and commercial uses.
From the latest images unveiled, it is easy to dismiss the Hilux Rangga SUV as a standard Hilux Rangga with a flatbed canopy installed. Upon further inspection, however, you can see the extensive work both TAM and New Armada have done to transform this commercial truck into a full-fledged passenger vehicle, which includes dedicated rear doors with complex rear windows, a boxy rear end with vertically mounted taillights, as well as the six-spoke alloy wheels it rides on.
Although no on-board photos were published by Toyota Indonesia, the automaker did say that the Hilux Rangga SUV will come with seven seats in a 2-3-2 layout. Given the compact footprint the standard Hilux Rangga truck boasts, we can expect the SUV cabin to be quite tight and limited, let alone its cargo space.
The Indo-spec Toyota Hilux Rangga comes in both petrol and diesel powertrain options.
What’s confirmed is that the Hilux Rangga SUV will ride on the same IMV ladder-frame platform used on both the Hilux and Fortuner, instead of the new IMV-0 platform primed on its pick-up truck twin. Regardless of that, engine specs for the Hilux Rangga SUV will mirror its commercial twin, where it comes with either a 2.0-litre 4-cyl petrol engine rated at 137 HP and 183 NM or a more potent 2.4-litre turbodiesel version rated at 148 HP and 343 NM. Both engines are mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed auto that sends power to the rear wheels (RWD).
According to Toyota Astra Motor marketing director Jimmy Suwandi, who spoke to local Indonesian news outlet Antara Otomotif, the final production version of the Toyota Hilux Rangga SUV is slated to make its official debut sometime later in early 2025. And just like its flatbed twin, this compact SUV will be reportedly priced below IDR 400 million (RM110,899), thus making it slightly pricier than the pick-up truck but still much cheaper than the Fortuner SUV, which currently retails from IDR 573 million (RM158,863) in Indonesia.
At the moment, it remains unclear whether the Hilux Rangga SUV will be offered in other international markets, but given that the Hilux Rangga truck is also on sale in the Thai market as the Hilux Champ, perhaps there’s a chance we’ll get to see this three-row SUV making its way to other ASEAN markets in the near future.
