16-Year-Old Nabbed Over Horrific Crash In Kuching
A 16-year-old driver is being investigated for a deadly crash that claimed five lives in Kuching on Tuesday, January 14, at 12:50 p.m. Three men and a woman, ages 16 to 45, were declared dead at the scene, while a 16-year-old boy passed away while undergoing treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital's red zone, says Kuching police head ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah
According to Mohd Farhan, preliminary investigations revealed that at approximately 12:50 p.m. yesterday, a car travelling from Jalan Lapangan Terbang towards Jalan Setia Raja lost control, veered into the opposite lane, and collided with the other vehicles, resulting in an accident involving three cars and two motorcycles.
“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a penalty of five to 10 years in prison and a fine of RM20,000 to RM50,000 upon conviction,” he said in a statement.
Mohd Farhan urges anyone with information on this incident to contact Traffic Investigation Officer ASP Lucas Apin at 013-824 6881 or 082-259 900 or to visit the nearest police station.
He also added that the 16-year-old driver will be detained once discharged from the hospital.
A distress call was received at 12:59 p.m., according to the Bomba Fire and Rescue Department in Sarawak, with reports of casualties trapped at the location. Firefighters from Tabuan Jaya and Batu Lintang fire stations were immediately dispatched to the scene.
“Among the nine victims, four were killed at the scene — a woman; a man trapped in a Proton Saga, who was extricated using rescue tools; and two other men, whose deaths were confirmed by medical personnel at the scene,” said a Bomba spokesperson in a statement.
