Volvo Just Opened A New Centre In Kuching. So Why Can't You Buy A Car There?

Volvo has opened a new centre in Kuching, but there's a small catch if you were hoping to walk into the facility and drive away in a brand-new Volvo.

You can't buy one there. At least, not yet.

Volvo Car Malaysia has opened a new 2S centre in Kuching, Sarawak, operated by dealer partner Sebangga Mitsinbo Sdn Bhd. But unlike a conventional full dealership, the facility is currently dedicated entirely to after-sales servicing and spare parts.

So, what happens if you're in Sarawak and actually want to buy a new Volvo?

For now, Volvo says new-car orders are still being handled through Sebangga Mitsinbo's Kota Kinabalu branch in Sabah. The good news is that this arrangement isn't intended to be permanent, as preparations are already underway to turn the Kuching operation into a full dealership.

In other words, Volvo is building up its Kuching presence aftersales first, sales later.

For Existing Volvo Owners, This Is Probably The Bigger News

Not being able to buy a car at the new centre might sound strange, but for existing Volvo owners in Sarawak, the more important development is arguably what's already available.

The new Kuching facility gives customers a dedicated location for vehicle servicing and genuine Volvo spare parts, rather than requiring the site to wait until full sales operations are ready before opening its doors.

That also appears to be deliberate.

Sebangga Mitsinbo dealer principal Datuk Tan Heng San said the company wanted to begin by taking care of the Volvo community already in Sarawak, before expanding the operation into sales.

It's an interesting way of building up Volvo's presence in Kuching. Rather than starting with shiny cars in a showroom and building the ownership support around them afterwards, Volvo's new Kuching operation is effectively doing the reverse.

So When Can You Actually Buy A Volvo In Kuching?

That's the part we don't have a firm date for yet. Volvo says Sebangga Mitsinbo is preparing the Kuching facility to become an official dealership, describing it as part of the brand's effort to strengthen its presence in East Malaysia.

However, based on Volvo's announcement, no confirmed opening date for full new-car sales in Kuching has been announced.

Until that happens, prospective buyers will continue placing their orders through the dealer's Kota Kinabalu operation.

So if you're wondering whether this counts as Volvo having a full dealership in Kuching, the distinction matters:

Kuching now has official Volvo after-sales support, while full dealership operations are still coming.

Volvo Is Paying More Attention To East Malaysia

There's a bigger regional story here too. Volvo Car Malaysia managing director Chris Wailes described the Kuching opening as an important step in strengthening the brand's presence in East Malaysia, with the company saying it intends to establish a more complete network of dealerships in the region.

And Kuching has been getting rather interesting lately. We've already seen Zeekr establish its first East Malaysian store in Kuching, and now Volvo is strengthening its own presence in the Sarawak capital, albeit beginning with after-sales operations.

The two developments aren't evidence by themselves of some sudden premium-car gold rush in Kuching, but they do show that the city is receiving fresh attention from brands operating at the premium end of the market.

That's something worth watching.

Volvo Thinks One Of Its EVs Is Particularly Suited To Sarawak

Volvo also used the Kuching opening to highlight the EX30 Cross Country, positioning the compact electric SUV as particularly relevant to Sarawak. The company pointed towards its all-wheel-drive capability, raised ground clearance and more adventure-oriented character when making that case.

Whether those attributes are enough to make an electric Volvo particularly appealing to Sarawak buyers is another question entirely, especially once charging availability, driving distances and ownership patterns outside Kuching enter the conversation. But it does offer a clue as to the products Volvo believes could fit the market as its East Malaysian presence develops.

Service First, Showroom Later

Ultimately, the new Kuching centre is a slightly unusual dealership story precisely because it isn't really a full dealership story yet. For existing Volvo owners, the important part has already happened: dedicated service and parts support is now available locally. 

For prospective buyers, there's still some waiting to do. New-car orders remain routed through Kota Kinabalu for now, while Sebangga Mitsinbo prepares the Kuching facility for its next phase.
