When it comes to decarbonisation, Japanese automaking giant Toyota reckons there are multiple pathways apart form electrification...

There’s no hiding the fact that we are now in the age where automakers and consumer motorists alike stand much more conscious of their shared environment. With that comes increased demands for mobility solutions that aren’t just resource-efficient, but ones that are also more sustainable and – critically – carbon-neutral.

The need to remove and significantly reduce harmful emissions stood as a key catalyst for many mainstream automakers towards adopting full electrification, which has fast become a popular ‘default’ method amongst many. However, that’s not the case with Toyota as the Japanese stalwart reckons electrification is just one of several paths available.

In fact, as explained and argued in its renowned “Multi-Pathway” strategy, Toyota firmly believes that other solutions with equally – or greater – effectiveness exists. It includes both its renowned series-parallel hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technologies, as well as fuel cell systems, hydrogen combustion engines, and synthetic fuels (e-fuels) too.

The Innova Zenix, as well as the recently introduced ninth-gen Camry and face-lifted Corolla Cross, all feature the latest fifth-gen evolution of the renowned Toyota HEV powertrain first pioneered by the Prius in 1997.

Evidently, it's the Toyota HEV powertrain tech that arguably stands as the biggest success amongst the methods listed. Even for the uninitiated, it’s not difficult to grasp how Toyota achieved so, especially through the exemplary current models likes of its Innova Zenix MPV, refreshed Corolla Cross crossover, and latest ninth-gen Camry saloon.

Primed across all three is the latest fifth-generation evolution of Toyota’s novel combined petrol-electric propulsion tech first pioneered by the renowned Prius back in 1997. Over the years, this enclosed, self-charging type hybrid setup has  become not just more sensible and efficient, but also much more versatile and capable than ever.

If you don’t already know how the Toyota HEV hybrid system works, here’s a quick and simple summary: it’s a system designed to deliver true synergy when combining both a petrol-powered combustion (ICE) mill and an electric motor (e-motor). In fact, the following video ought to explain the entire system in much greater detail:

Certainly, the key here is the e-motor element becoming much more compact and much more powerful, complemented by longer-lasting batteries with even higher charging and discharging cycles. This then perhaps explains the high capabilities plus the wide versatility that has now become a signature trait that the Toyota HEV powertrain is renowned for.

Introduced locally back in June 2023, the Toyota Innova Zenix 2.0 HEV featured here is priced at RM202,000.

This is arguably very evident in the Toyota Innova Zenix model we sampled not too long ago. Despite its massive size and bulk, never once did the hybrid powertrain primed in the HEV-badged range-topping variant felt gutless or lacked puff when tasked with hauling an entire family plus luggage in tow just about anywhere.

As a refresher, the third-gen Innova variant adopts a 2.0-litre 4-cyl petrol mill augmented by a hybrid e-motor system featuring a compact 6.5 Ahr Ni-Mh battery pack, both tied and managed seamlessly by an eCVT box. Whilst the ICE half outputs 152 HP and 188 NM, the electrified side brings a 113 HP and 206 NM boost plus limited all-electric driving range into the mix.

Despite its size and bulk, the Innova Zenix 2,0 HEV proved to be a highly efficient people-mover in our hands thanks to its proven and highly efficient HEV powertrain.

What surprised most was the package’s ability to yield an average fuel economy as low as 4.6 litres/100 KM. Said figure is very respectable for a three-row family MPV indeed. Much of this stems from the HEV powertrain’s greater lean on electric power over pure combustion power, which proved highly adept for both urban, stop-go traffic and highway cruising.

Couple this partially charged yet highly efficient and versatile powertrain with its traits as a stylish, practical, plush and very safe mid-sized MPV and it’s easy to see how the Innova Zenix proves to be a solid choice for many family and household heads alike. Click here to relive what life was like with one in our in-depth test-drive report of it.

Brilliant fuel efficiency aside, the Innova Zenix 2.0 HEV is also not short in both luxe and tech.

Apart from being the ideal family-mover, the Innova Zenix is also a clear  testament to the notion that partial-electrification can be just as effective towards decarbonised mobility. The bonus here is its adoption doesn’t entail with drastic changes to one driving or lifestyle routines when compared to full EVs.
