Talks Ongoing With KPDN Regarding 'Total Loss' Vehicles Being Reused - JPJ
In an interview with Mingguan Malaysia, JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli stated that the department is looking into the problem of "total loss" cars being reused on the road, following directives by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to insurance companies.
Given the high number of vehicles on the road classified as Beyond Economic Repair (BER) and Actual Total Loss (ATL), Aedy emphasised that the problem continues to pose a major challenge to the authorities.
He says that stronger compliance with auction criteria is required for such vehicles, which will necessitate further monitoring to avoid the resale of vehicles that are judged unsafe for the road yet remain in circulation.
It is disheartening that commercial vehicles declared as total loss by insurance companies are being reused,” Aedy added.
The JPJ DG said the department is in talks with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) on the subject, even though there are no legal provisions as of yet.
Regarding JPJ's integrity, Aedly stressed a zero-tolerance stance to integrity violations, revealing that just 18 occurrences have been reported in MACC reports since 2016, the majority of which have been resolved.
"There will be no compromise on any violations, including corruption or abuse of power. I will not offer a second chance and will take appropriate action in accordance with laws and civil service regulations," he said.
"There are only four new cases under MACC that we recently received at the end of last year. We are currently investigating these to determine the necessary action, whether disciplinary measures or other penalties," he added.
In October 2024, an individual posted a message on Telegram claiming that one of his relatives observed his old car, which had been written off as a total loss vehicle, back on the road.
The man further said that when he checked the MyJPJ program, he discovered that the vehicle's road tax was still current, despite the fact that it had been declared a total loss 12 years earlier.
