As of February 1st, police had issued 104,235 summonses for various traffic offences under Operation Selamat 23, according to Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, director of the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT).

The majority of the 49,339 summonses were issued for six specific traffic violations: speeding (44,940), running red lights (2,034), using a mobile phone while driving (869), driving in the emergency lane (602), cutting the queue (573), and overtaking on double lines (321), he says.

The police reported that the number of traffic summonses issued during Operation Selamat 23, which began on January 28, had decreased as of February 2nd compared to the same period last year.

“So, we will conduct a study to see if (the reduced number of) summonses issued is because of road users complying with traffic rules or the road safety and advocacy campaign that we carried out previously”, he added.

During the Op Selamat 23 operation, Mohd Yusri added, police found 408 hotspots for traffic congestion and 76 blackspots (areas that are prone to accidents) on federal, state, and local roads, including 27 hotspots and 17 blackspots on highways across the country.

“That’s why we formed the Emergency Response Team (ERT). We focused on 14 teams along highways to take necessary action (continuous monitoring to ensure smooth traffic flow and swiftly removing any obstacles along the highways).
