"I don't believe ordinary citizens need to worry or be impacted, regardless of the methods introduced in the RON95 rationalisation issue.”
"Do not pay attention to rumours; even during the fasting month, when concerns arise about increases in electricity tariffs, I want to reassure everyone that such increases will only affect the wealthy," he said to NST earlier today after performing Friday prayers at Masjid Jamek Raja Tun Uda in Section 16, Shah Alam.
The Malaysian prime minister further added that the study made by government agencies shows that 90% will remain unaffected by these RON95 subsidy changes, with the ones affected the most being foreigners and the “extremely wealthy” groups.
Yesterday, Second Finance Minister YB Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the government will announce the mechanism for rationalising the RON95 fuel subsidy using MyKad in the second half of the year.
In October last year, Anwar had said that the rich and foreigners were currently enjoying the subsidy for RON 95, and this was not sustainable.
"I need to remind everyone that it is better for this RM8 billion to be channeled into education facilities, healthcare, and public transport," he said.
