1,500 KM EV Battery And Next-Gen Fast Charging Headlines CATL Tech Day

Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) unveiled a trio of groundbreaking battery technologies during its “Tech Day” event on April 21, marking what could be a pivotal moment in the ongoing competition between pure electric and hybrid vehicles.
Leading the announcements was the debut of CATL’s new “Freevoy Dual Power Battery,” an innovative system featuring a dual-core architecture capable of delivering an extraordinary driving range of over 1,500 KM on a single charge. This development positions fully electric vehicles to challenge hybrid models on long-distance usability for the first time.

The Freevoy battery’s design divides the energy storage into two distinct zones — a main energy area and a range extension area — each optimised with different cell materials to maximise their specific strengths.
Supporting this architecture is a comprehensive dual-core management system, which oversees high and low voltage safety, thermal runaway protection, and structural integrity, taking inspiration from the redundancy principles seen in dual-engine aircraft.

A key breakthrough in the Freevoy battery is CATL’s self-generating negative electrode technology, deployed in the range extension zone. By eliminating conventional graphite anodes, the company has succeeded in boosting the battery’s energy density significantly without increasing its physical footprint.
Alongside Freevoy, CATL introduced the second-generation Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery. This next evolution sets a new benchmark for charging speeds, offering a peak rate close to 12C and a maximum charging power exceeding 1.3 megawatts.

Under real-world conditions, this equates to adding around 2.5 KM of range for every second of charging, or over 520 KM in just five minutes when connected to suitably equipped megawatt-level chargers.
Performance under cold conditions has also been elevated. Even at -10°C, the battery can charge from 5% to 80% in only 15 minutes. Despite low charge levels, it is capable of delivering peak output power of up to 830kW, equivalent to more than 1,100 HP.

This second-generation Shenxing battery builds on the success of its predecessor, which made headlines in 2023 as the first lithium iron phosphate battery to support 4C fast charging and deliver 400 KM of range in just 10 minutes.
The third highlight of the event was CATL’s sodium-ion battery, which is slated for mass production by December. Suitable for both hybrid and pure electric vehicles, this battery achieves an industry-leading energy density of 175Wh/kg. For hybrids, this unlocks over 200 KM of pure electric driving, while full electric models can exceed 500 KM per charge.

The sodium-ion battery also supports 5C superfast charging and is rated for an impressive 10,000 full charge cycle life. During testing, the new cells withstood extreme safety scenarios which included needle punctures, compression, electric drilling, and even being sawed in half — all without combustion or explosion.
In addition to its safety advantages, sodium-ion chemistry offers superior cold-weather performance, addressing one of the most persistent shortcomings of traditional lithium-ion systems. Even at -30°C, the battery can charge from 30% to 80% within 30 minutes, maintaining up to 93% of its usable capacity.
Vehicles powered by this technology can sustain highway speeds of 120 KM/H even at extreme temperatures of -40°C and near-zero state of charge - a capability that could redefine electric mobility in cold climates.
