Government Urged To Address Rising DRT Fares By Private Operators

Puchong residents are calling for the Selangor government to step in and address the recent fare hikes for the demand-responsive transport (DRT) service by private operators. Mike Chong from Puchong Hartamas voices his concern about the substantial increase in fares, which have doubled from RM2 to RM4.
He claimed the increase contradicts the state government's stated goal of encouraging more people to use public transport. The DRT service is an important last-mile solution since it bridges the space between public transport hubs and final destinations, which can be difficult for passengers, according to Mike.
“Affordable last-mile services are essential for improving public transport adoption, reducing traffic congestion and minimising environmental impact.
“Low prices ensure that these benefits are accessible to everyone, fostering a more sustainable and connected transportation ecosystem,” he says in a StarMetro report.

Mike was referring to DRT service provider Trek Rides, which has recently announced fare hikes and reduced operating hours in Puchong and Serdang. Additionally, it has ceased operations in Taman Melawati, Taman Keramat, and Ampang.
Previously, all five zones were under Selangor Mobility, a state government initiative aimed at enhancing public transportation and mobility services throughout the state. To make regular van rides more affordable, Trek Rides has also introduced monthly passes ranging from RM35 to RM80.
On March 12, Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated released a formal request for proposal (RFP) to interested organizations for the operation of the Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) service under the Selangor Mobility initiative. The submission deadline for responses to the RFP is April 7.

Chong criticized the state government for insufficient communication, as there was no prior notification given regarding the suspension of incentives for current DRT operators pending the selection of new service providers, as stated in the announcement.
A Bandar Puteri Puchong resident, who chose to remain anonymous, emphasized the necessity for regular collection of public input on the DRT service. He cautioned authorities and operators against implementing last-minute changes and suggested expanding the DRT's coverage to encourage its use.
Ng Sze Han, the chairman of the Selangor Investment, Trade, and Mobility Committee, said that DRT service providers would not be able to operate under the Selangor Mobility program during the RFP period. However, they could continue to operate in accordance with their own business goals, he told StarMetro.
Mobi and Trek Rides were the two DRT service providers that were formerly part of Selangor Mobility. With effect from March 14, Mobi has discontinued operations in all Selangor Mobility zones, specifically in Petaling Jaya's Taman Megah, Ara Damansara, and Bandar Utama, as well as in Subang Jaya's Bandar Sunway and USJ.
