LLM expects more than 2.42 million vehicles are heading back to the cities as the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays wind down.
The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) is expecting traffic heading to major cities nationwide to build up this coming weekend, as the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays wind down and many are preparing to return to work.
Speaking to NST, LLM Traffic Management senior assistant director Ahmad Kamil Abdul Halim said traffic volume is expected to reach 2.42 million vehicles from today (April 4) onwards, with several highways already experiencing congestion.
"This morning, traffic was generally smooth from the north, south, and east. However, we are now seeing heavier traffic at the Gombak Toll Plaza, as well as along the Seremban route heading north into Kuala Lumpur.
"Traffic is also building up at the Menora Tunnel stretch heading south towards the capital. Despite the increase, the situation remains under control," he told NST earlier today.
Kamil also added that while traffic yesterday (April 3) was projected at 2.2 million vehicles, actual records showed a surge to 2.4 million, exceeding expectations.
As of 11 AM today (April 4), a total of 621,527 vehicles were reported on several major highways, with 23,000 recorded travelling via the East Coast Expressway 1 (LPT1) towards Kuala Lumpur earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, AFA Infrastructure and Development Sdn Bhd Corporate Communications Department adviser Nurhaniza Mohd Khalil said traffic along the East Coast Expressway (LPT1) has been slow since the morning and is expected to worsen as the afternoon progresses. Besides LPT1, AFA also oversees the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK), where traffic is expected to build up throughout the upcoming weekend.
"Currently, traffic is beginning to slow at the Bentong Toll Plaza heading west, although the Gombak, Karak, and other toll plazas on LPT1 remain relatively clear.
"However, we expect major toll plazas such as Gombak and Karak to become increasingly congested later this afternoon," she added.
Those who are travelling back to the major cities this weekend are advised to check the latest traffic information via the toll-free Plusline at 1800-88-0000 and its official X/Twitter account or through the LLM hotline at 1800-887752 and its official X/Twitter account.
