MG Motor Malaysia (SAIC Motor Malaysia) has quietly teased its upcoming new MG S5 EV crossover SUV offering online via a dedicated teaser and registration of interest (ROI) webpage. Through which, the firm has also confirmed plans to launch the model in May this year.

A quick glance of the details and teaser images presented in the webpage mentioned shows MG Motor Malaysia electing to not reveal too much. However, there are plenty of clues abound, and we’ve got a reference in the form of the Thai market version that’s already on sale.

MG Motor Malaysia didn't reveal the MG S5 EV in full anywhere on this teaser page, but did drop plenty of clues and hints.

Launched in the Kingdom just north of our Peninsular’s border last month, the MG S5 EV sits some 4,476 M long with a 2,730 MM wheelbase, 1,849 MM wide and 1,621 MM tall. This sees the MG S5 EV share a similar footprint as the rivalling BYD Atto 3 and upcoming Honda e:N1.

Whilst here, we’ll also point out that the Thai-spec MG S5 EV boasts a claimed standard boot capacity of 542 litres, and it is expandable up to 1,441 litres thanks to split-folding rear seats. In turn, this bit keeps this EV crossover on par with its segment peers mentioned.

One notable detailed teased is the ability to draw in 150 kW DC charging inputs that promises 10-80% re-charges in 30 minutes. In turn, this suggests that the MG S5 EV will see a 'Long Range' guise offered locally and packing a sizable 64 kWh NMC-type battery pack.

No specific variants were confirmed through the teaser and ROI webpage noted, but MG Motor Malaysia does tout the presence of an on-board charger (OBC) that accepts 150 kW DC charging input that promises 10-80% re-charges in just 30 minutes.

That last trait more or less confirms that the firm will at least have the MG S5 EV readied for Malaysia in ‘Long Range’ guise as seen in neighbouring Thailand. In said market, this variant packs a sizeable 64 kWh NMC-type battery pack that also accepts 11 kW AC charging inputs.

Said Long Range guise is also set to feature a rear e-motor plus RWD setup promising dynamic handling plus up to 550 KM of NEDC-rated range.

For the Thai market, the Long Range guise mentioned sees its single rear-mounted e-motor setup output 245 PS and 350 NM to the rear wheels. Altogether, the setup is capable of despatching 0-100 KM/H in 6.1 secs and yield a claimed NEDC-rated range of up to 550 KM as well.

Next, the MG S5 EV teased for Malaysia sees the usual premium bits expected of most – if not all – Sino-badged EVs. All-LED forward and rear lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels, powered tailgate, as well as faux leather seats with power-adjustment and ventilation, are all accounted for.

Typical of most - if not all - Sino-badged EVs coming into our market, the MG S5 EV is also set woo prospects with a wealth of premium features and amenities primed as standard kit aboard.

Typical of any Sino-origin EVs again too are the digital displays brimmed aboard. Included is a massive 12.8-inch central infotainment toucschreen boasting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus 3D surround view camera view, as well as a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel.

Lastly, though not hinted by MG Motor Malaysia specifically, we can also expect full-blown Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving abilities enabled through a fully-loaded Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) package primed as standard at least in higher grade variants.

There’s little else to gauge apart from what we just detailed, and this also means that your guess is as good as ours when it comes to speculative prices. For reference, the rivalling BYD Atto 3 mentioned was recently re-priced to start from RM123,800 before discounts and rebates.

Expect pricing details, as well as after-sales and warranty information, to be revealed in the weeks leading up to the new official launch of the MG S5 EV next month. In the meantime, what do you folks reckon? Keen on this new Chinese EV entry? Hit the comments below with your take…
