Tesla Halts New Orders For US-Made Model X And Model S In China

Tesla has stopped accepting new orders for the Model S and Model X in China, signaling the potential discontinuation of these models in the Chinese market. Both models are made by the EV maker in the US and imported into the republic.

Reports indicate that Tesla's order page was taken down from its Chinese website late last week, according to Bloomberg, although the company did not release an official statement. It is also reported that the firm removed the affected models from its WeChat Mini Programs account.

The US and Donald Trump imposed new tariffs, and in response, China increased its own duties on US goods from 84% to 125%. Due to these tariff policies, and the resulting cost increase, Tesla may have found it unprofitable to sell new Model S or Model X cars in the republic.

The unavailability of Model X and Model S in China is unlikely to have a substantial effect on Tesla's overall sales, as these models accounted for less than 0.5% of the company's total deliveries in China in 2024. Specifically, only 1,553 Model X units and 311 Model S units were imported into China last year.

Although Chinese customers can still purchase these models from existing stock, their dwindling sales raise concerns about their future, particularly because they make up just a tiny percentage of Tesla's total sales.

The company is less affected by Trump's tariffs than other manufacturers because it produces most of its US market cars domestically and exports its Model 3 and Model Y cars to markets such as Europe.
