Almost 2,400 Wild Animals Killed On Malaysian Roads Since 2020

Between 2020 and 2024, data from the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, indicates that 2,361 wild animals were killed in road accidents across Malaysia.
Pahang reported the highest incidence of fatalities, numbering 765. Subsequent locations with significant wildlife casualties included Perak (478), Kelantan (224), Terengganu (201), and Negeri Sembilan (187), Nik Nazmi says.
Several endangered animals, including Malayan tigers and elephants, are also included in the list.

“In terms of species, eight elephants have died—one in 2020, two each in 2021 and 2024, and three so far this year, including the baby elephant whose tragic death went viral yesterday,” he said in a Bernama report.
Nik Nazmi also pointed out an increase in Malayan tiger fatalities; in 2023, one was reported, whereas in 2020 and 2022, none occurred. The number increased to three in 2024, and this year has already seen one more.

His remarks followed widespread outrage and concern when a video went viral showing a mother elephant trying to raise a container truck that was thought to have killed her child along the East-West Highway.
