Public Transport Usage Rates In Malaysia Are Worryingly Low - Ahmad Zahid
Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, pointed out that the Malaysia's public transportation usage is low, at roughly 25%. This figure significantly lags behind many developed countries.
He noted significantly higher usage rates in Singapore at 67%, Seoul stood at 63%, and Tokyo at 73%.
According to Zahid, increasing public transport adoption requires a shift in mindset, achievable through a reliable system coupled with widespread awareness campaigns.
“I have always believed that an efficient public transport system not only facilitates the daily movement of people but also acts as a catalyst for economic growth, social well-being, and inclusive mobility in both urban and rural areas,” Zahid said in a Facebook post.
The DPM also stated Malaysia faces increasing vehicle congestion, with registered vehicles surpassing the population by the end of 2024, reaching 38.7 million compared to 34.1 million population.
This growth is fueled by record-high vehicle sales, with the total industry volume reaching 816,747 units.
“This trend not only burdens the existing infrastructure but also increases road safety risks and negatively affects the people’s quality of life,” he added.
Zahid is optimistic that Malaysia can alleviate traffic congestion and reduce dependence on private vehicles. He believes that through the continuous work of organizations such as Prasarana, along with the collaboration of all stakeholders, the nation can achieve a more sustainable, efficient, and people-centric public transportation system.
