The special task force investigating the Teluk Intan crash that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel must submit a preliminary report to the Ministry of Transport (MOT) within 30 days, starting from May 15, Bernama has reported.
Its Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook announced that the task force, headed by MOT Chief Air Accident Inspector Brigadier General Tan Chee Kee and composed of officials from various agencies and experts, has begun its investigation into the May 13 collision last week.
The committee comprises Simpang Renggam MP Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad, Jerantut MP Khairil Nizam Khirudin, Prof. Dr. Kulanthayan KC Mani @ Subramaniam from Universiti Putra Malaysia, independent engineer Datuk Foong Choy Chye, and representatives from the Malaysian Armed Forces, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), the Road Transport Department (JPJ), and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).
“MOT will ensure that every recommendation and finding submitted by the task force is thoroughly reviewed for appropriate follow-up at both policy and operational levels,” he said, adding that the team was established to thoroughly investigate the incident's root causes and identify any structural weaknesses in road safety protocols.
“They must also reassess existing guidelines, infrastructure and the application of safety technologies to help prevent similar incidents in the future,” he said.
The primary objective of the investigation, according to Loke, is to identify and rectify weaknesses within the existing system, not to assign fault. He stated that the investigation will focus on proposing systematic and realistic solutions to enhance the safety of all road users, particularly concerning large trucks.
A Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) truck, returning to its base in Ipoh after providing security for a festival in Teluk Intan, was involved in a fatal collision with a gravel lorry at 8:40 a.m. on Tuesday. Tragically, nine FRU officers died, and two others sustained serious injuries in the incident.
The owner of the gravel truck involved stated that the vehicle passed its Puspakom inspection last month and had valid documents and road tax. The 58-year-old owner, Ravi, confirmed the successful inspection and road tax renewal.
