JPJ Will Audit 500 High-Risk Bus, Lorry Operators
Beginning June 23, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will kick off a focused safety inspection on 500 high-risk goods and passenger transport operators under the JISA Special Operation.
Initiated by Transport Minister Anthony Loke, the move targets companies with questionable safety performance, aiming to close compliance gaps under the Road Transport Act 1987 and the Land Public Transport Act.
JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the audits will assess critical areas like driver oversight, vehicle upkeep, and safety practices in line with the Industrial Code of Practice, as part of efforts to prevent future accidents and improve industry accountability.
“This move is in response to the recent spike in accidents involving commercial vehicles, including the June 9 bus crash that claimed 15 UPSI students’ lives,” Aedy says, adding that the operations also cover resolving vehicle/driver issues and ensuring Vehicle Technical Plan adherence.
He highlighted that JPJ has identified 500 high-risk operators based on compliance records and outstanding summonses from the enforcement agency and APAD databases. This includes 300 truck operators, 100 tour bus companies, and 100 express bus businesses.
Operators found violating regulations will face severe penalties, such as receiving violation letters, suspension or revocation of their vocational driving licenses, and termination of their operator permits.
