The Ministry of Transport (MOT) will introduce basic language and driver etiquette training programmes for taxi drivers in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), said MOT Minister YB Anthony Loke.

According to Loke, the taxi industry plays a far more important role than simply providing transport services. Taxi drivers are often the first point of contact for international visitors, and as such, their conduct, communication skills and professionalism directly shape tourists’ first impressions of Malaysia.

The taxi industry is not just about transportation. It is the heartbeat of public service and the first face of the nation to tourists, Loke said in a Facebook post. That is why we are planning training to improve language capabilities and customer service standards across the board.

The move comes as part of a broader effort to boost the quality of public transport services ahead of VM2026, a nationwide tourism campaign expected to attract millions of international visitors. Loke believes that enhancing the experience at every level, including first-mile services such as taxis, will be key to the campaign's success.

In addition to training, the government has expanded the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) contribution incentive for taxi drivers. The subsidy, previously set at 10%, has now been increased to 30%, an initiative costing the ministry RM3.5 million.

This, Loke said, reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of drivers, many of whom work long hours and face daily occupational risks. These reforms are ongoing, and I will continue working alongside this industry to strengthen our public transport system for the benefit of the people, he said.

Loke made the announcement after officiating the third annual general meeting of the Malaysia Taxi, Rental Car, Limousine and Airport Taxi Association (GTSM). The event provided him with a valuable opportunity to engage directly with industry players and hear their concerns.

He noted that collaboration with associations such as GTSM is crucial in driving meaningful and long-term improvements in the sector.
