New Law In Works To Protect E-Hailing, P-Hailing Riders- DPM
A safety net for gig workers will be introduced by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as part of a new act that will protect the welfare of workers in the gig economy. This safety net will include coverage from the Social Security Organization (Perkeso), contributions to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), and provisions for medical treatment costs.
According to Zahid, the human resources ministry (Kesuma) will present the proposed bill during the current Dewan Rakyat session as soon as the Supply Bill 2025 debates are over. "The move shows the government stands in solidarity with the 1.16 million gig workers nationwide," he continued.

In his statement, Ahmad Zahid acknowledged that the new legislation's proposed medical treatment costs might have an impact on his finances, but he says that it is necessary to protect gig workers' welfare.
Regarding how the new law differs from the current labor laws, Zahid stated that the latter do not particularly address the most recent advancements in the gig economy. Zahid stated the cabinet has determined that a dedicated act is necessary to ensure that this legislation does not conflict with existing laws, based on a recommendation from the human resources minister.
