YASA’s 738-HP Axial Flux Motor Sets New Unofficial World Record
YASA has claimed a new world record for the highest-density motor ever on its new 738 HP-rated axial flux motor.
UK-based firm YASA has claimed to set a new world record for the highest-density electric motor ever, with its new, 738 HP-rated axial flux motor unit. Weighing only 13.1 kg, this equates to 56 HP per kilogram, which is more than double the current industry benchmark of 20 HP per kg.
With this power-to-weight ratio, YASA has claimed the unofficial record, with the current motor unit with the highest power-to-weight ratio being Australia’s Equipmake HPM-400, which puts out 54 HP per kg.
Said record-breaking figure was recorded by YASA during prototype testing of its axial motor last week. According to the firm, what’s more impressive about their motor is the fact that the unit uses no exotic materials to achieve this feat, nor was it designed using 3D printing.
YASA CTO and founder Dr. Tim Woolmer
Commenting on this unofficial record-breaking feat, YASA CTO and founder Dr. Tim Woolmer told Autocar UK, “This result is a glimpse of what’s possible when deep tech, R&D, and practical engineering come together. We’ve shown that you don’t need exotic materials or experimental manufacturing processes to achieve record-breaking performance.
"What we’ve achieved here is not just a number—it’s a demonstration of scalable, production-ready innovation that raises the bar for electric motor design. And the most exciting part? We’re just getting started,” the CTO continued.
While this record is still unofficial, YASA insists that it represents a “major milestone” not only for the company but also for what’s possible at the cutting edge of practical, high-performance electric motor design.”
As of now, there are no official details on the real-world application of this new axial flux motor, nor when its production version will ever be launched. That being said, YASA currently supplies electric motors to infamous brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, and even Mercedes-Benz—the latter simply because YASA is part of Mercedes-Benz AG.
Once the new motor is ready, YASA said its production can reach up to 50,000 units a year, set to take place at the company’s main production facility in Oxfordshire, UK.
Dubbed the “Cosworth of e-motors,” YASA was established in 2009 by Dr. Tim Woolmer while he was studying at Oxford. Over the past 16 years, the company has evolved from being a small-time operation to a major player in the electrified vehicle world, in charge of powering up some high-performance models like the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, the Koenigsegg Regera, and numerous Mercedes-AMG models after the automaker’s acquisition in 2021.
