JSPT: Number Plates Flippers Online Are Illegal
-full_normal.jpg)
Just as the dummy seatbelt buckle issue remains unresolved, another menacing trend has surfaced thanks to the power of e-commerce.
The Star reported, number plate flippers are openly advertised on e-commerce platforms, with China-based sellers listing them for as little as RM150 and up to over RM300. Multiple listings were spotted, though thankfully no local sellers have been spotted so far.

The device allows motorists to conceal or even swap their registration plates at the push of a button. Some models use a motorised flip mechanism to rotate in a fake registration plate, while others rely on shutters that drop down to hide the original plate completely.
While advertised as “protection” against weather or rough roads, many sellers openly promote their ability to provide “privacy”, “security” and a way to dodge traffic cameras. The kits include remotes, wiring and installation guides, with claims they can be fitted in under ten minutes.

Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri warned that motorists caught with these devices face stern action under the Road Transport Act. Offenders can be jailed up to a year, fined as much as RM5,000, or both. Vehicles found with plate flippers will be seized and their owners brought to court.
Yusri further added that JSPT will intensify enforcement and mount special operations to detect such devices, while also working with the Domestic Trade and Digital ministries to clamp down on their sale.

Criminologists say the issue must be taken seriously, warning that plate flippers could undermine traffic enforcement and hamper police in pursuing criminals. Calls are growing for laws to be updated to criminalise not only their use but also their import, storage and installation.
What may look like a novelty gadget online could quickly escalate into a real threat to safety and law enforcement if left unchecked.
