MINI & Deus Ex Machina Reveals The Skeg and The Machina JCW-based Specials

MINI has teamed up with Deus Ex Machina to create two striking one-offs based on the hot combustion (ICE) and electric (EV) JCW variants that celebrate performance, design and culture. Called The Skeg and The Machina, the pair embody contrasting energies.
One is a surf-inspired EV, while the other is petrol-powered and rooted in motorsport. Both share the same spirit of craftsmanship and creativity.

The Skeg is MINI’s take on EV performance through the lens of surf culture. Finished in vivid yellow and silver, it makes a bold first impression. Wide fenders, an illuminated grille and a roof spoiler sharpen the stance.
Semi-transparent fiberglass panels reduce weight by 15% while improving aerodynamics. At the rear, a Flex Tip Surf Spoiler mimics the movement of a surfboard, turning airflow into function.

Roof tension straps pay homage to the ritual of tying down boards after a session. Inside, that detail is echoed on the dashboard and steering wheel. Neoprene bucket seats are flexible and water-resistant, while fiberglass trays provide storage for wetsuits.
The dashboard borrows directly from surfboard construction. Controls are analogue and mechanical, stripped back to the essentials. Deus Collection badges and 3D-printed details highlight the collaboration.

The Machina meanwhile is an ICE-powered statement that channels MINI’s motorsport DNA. Its red, white and black livery is striking at first glance. Widened fenders add presence, while Deus lettering marks its identity.
Four auxiliary bonnet lights pay tribute to rally history. At the back, a diffuser inspired by MINI JCW race cars improves airflow, while a centrally mounted exhaust amplifies the car’s character. A Can-Am-style rear wing completes the race-inspired silhouette.

Inside, the theme is pure motorsport. Five-point harnesses secure the driver, raw aluminium plates line the floor and a roll cage towers overhead. The waxed fabric dash adds a rugged touch. Bold white ‘X’ motifs on the door panels echo the exterior. Switches and levers are deliberately mechanical. A hydraulic handbrake serves as a direct connection between driver and machine.

Now despite its radical looks, under the skin they stick with familiar JCW hardware. The Machina relies on MINI’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, good for 228 HP and 380 NM while The Skeg’s all-electric drivetrain delivers 258 HP and 350 NM.
MINI and Deus describe the project as a meeting of shared values. “Every single detail has been crafted with artisanal precision and expertise,” said Holger Hampf, Head of MINI Design.

Creative input came from BMW’s Designworks and Deus co-founder Carby Tuckwell while designer Matt Willey led the exterior graphics, building on his past collaborations with Deus.
The Skeg and The Machina are built as opposites that complement each other. One is coastal and progressive. The other is mechanical and motorsport-driven. Together, they represent MINI John Cooper Works at its boldest.
