New smart #2 Supermini Teased – Same Bones As Proton e.MAS 5?
Geely-led smart Automobile just teased its upcoming new #2 model, which the it confirmed will be a 'successor' to the smart Fortwo city car.

It appears that the smart Automobile brand is somewhat set to return to its roots if its latest teaser is anything to go by.
The brand, now co-owned equally by China’s Geely and legacy German marque Mercedes-Benz – but primarily led by the former – just teased its upcoming new ‘#2’, releasing single teaser images featuring a shadow silhouettes of which.

Further teaser images released by smart Automobile that confirms the '#2' naming, plus its compact, two-seat city car styling and package, as well as EV-only status.

From which, it’s essentially easy to see that the smart #2 will stand as the spiritual ‘successor’ to the marque’s previous signature Fortwo model. In fact, the new #2 is set to bring back its predecessor's compact, two-seat, two-door hatch city car design and package.
Tech specs remain under wraps, but smart Automobile reportedly confirmed it will be electric-only (EV) – there won’t be a combustion (ICE) twin like before. Additionally, just like the #1, #3 and #5, the upcoming smart #2 will also be 'styled' by Mercedes-Benz.
Speculation is also rife online that the new smart #2 would share the same GEA platform base as the Proton e.MAS 5 (Geely Xingyuan).
Moreover, online speculation are also rife that the smart #2 teased will underpin the same Global Electric Architecture (GEA) platform base as the best-selling (in China) Geely Xingyuan EV city car – also better known as the upcoming Proton e.MAS 5.
Dirk Adelmann, CEO of smart Europe GmbH, reportedly once said prior that the company was working on a new platform bespoke to the model, but that the financial case for its development would hinge on finding a partner.
The third (and final) generation smart Fortwo (and Forfour) city cars range, which went out of production last year with annual European sales peaking at 100,000 units annually.

“The [city car] segment is not huge in Europe. The best year for [the] Fortwo was around 100,000 units, and that’s not enough to justify a platform,” continued Adelmann further in the same interview with Autocar UK.
BY sharing the platform with a partner, Adelman says investment costs can also be shared, as well as the production site, altogether making the development endeavour more feasible too.

In all-electric smart Fortwo EQ form, the supermini offer just about 159 KM of range from its 17.6 kWh battery pack that didn't even have the ability to draw in DC charging.

For reference, the smart Fortwo EQ, measured just 2,695 MM long with a 1,873 MM wheelbase figure, 1,663 MM wide and just 1,555 MM tall. From the teaser images provided, the upcoming new smart #2 is expected to fit within this footprint too.
Mechanically, the third-gen Fortwo detailed packed a 17.6 kWh battery pack that yielded a range of just 99 miles (approx. 159 KM), whilst charging speed was capped at just 22 kW – it did not have the ability to draw in DC charging inputs.
Though the third-gen smart Fortwo had a combustion (ICE) option, the new smart #2 successor detailed won't - it will be electric (EV) only.

Whilst said predecessor, which went out of production last year, saw its powertrain design compromised by its combustion (ICE) origins, this new smart #2 successor teased should prove to be a better EV city car when it debuts.
Whilst Chinese sources online did not report an exact reveal and launch timeline, European sources online have instead reported that the smart #2 is due for market arrival sometime late next year (2026).
