VW Polo Reborn as an EV Hatch with a Hotter GTI Version

Volkswagen has revived the Polo nameplate for its new subcompact EV hatch, which will include a hotter GTI version.
Remember the VW ID.2all concept shown a few years back? Turns out Volkswagen has decided to revive the Polo nameplate for its production version, which now will be known as the Volkswagen ID.Polo. This new subcompact EV hatch will be shown in the flesh for the first time at the upcoming IAA Mobility 2025 motor show, along with a hotter GTI version simply known as the VW ID.Polo GTI.
According to VW CEO Thomas Schaefer, the ID.Polo will mark a departure in the naming convention for its electric lineup, as the automaker will use “well-known names” for their EVs in the future.
More importantly, this approach could also mean that VW will blend some of its iconic nameplates with the ID prefix for their upcoming EV models, so we might get things like ID.Tiguan or even ID.Golf in the near future.

Now back to the new ID.Polo, while the two models are tightly wrapped in a camouflage drape, we can still tell that it stays mostly true to the original concept, featuring a sporty five-door hatch bodystyle with familiar VW design cues scattered around.

Besides the ID.3-like LED headlights and illuminated VW badges, we can also see that the ID.Polo rolls on a sporty set of 19-inch wheels, although the taillights are fully covered in the camo wrap.

Predictably, the GTI version ups the ante by featuring a more aggressive bodykit with slightly flared fenders and a front diffuser, as well as a split rear wing. For added sportiness, the ID.Polo GTI also boasts a lower stance while riding on 19-inch GTI wheels with an intricate spoke design.

Dimension-wise, the ID.Polo measures 4,053 mm long, 1,816 mm wide, and 1,530 mm tall, making it on par with other European subcompact EV hatches like the Renault 5 E-Tech, Peugeot E-208, and many more.
Given the full camo wrap situation, we couldn’t even get a glimpse of the ID.Polo’s interior setup, but expect some high degree of tech primed in this subcompact EV hatch.

As for its powertrain, both the ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI will underpin the same MEB Entry platform, which is part of VW Group’s ‘Electric Urban Car Family’ lineup that also includes models from other brands under its umbrella. Two battery options will be offered for the ID.Polo, namely the smaller 38 kWh and the larger 56 kWh unit that is good for up to 450 km of EV range, plus up to 125 kW of DC fast charging rate.
Power will be provided by a single, front-mounted (FWD) electric motor setup with four different states of tune. And predictably, the hotter ID.Polo GTI will get the highest power output at 223 hp, although rumours suggest that there will be a more potent Clubsport version coming in the near future.

Production for the all-new VW ID.Polo is scheduled to begin later this year, with deliveries set to commence in selected European markets in early 2026. As of now, VW has yet to confirm plans to bring this new EV hatch beyond the Old Continent borders.
