BYD eMAX 9 DM-i Debuts in the Philippines, Malaysia Next?

BYD Cars Philippines introduced the BYD eMAX 9 DM-i making the Philippines the first market in the world to debut the brand’s new flagship plug-in hybrid MPV.
Known as the BYD Xia in China and the M9 in select international markets, this premium seven-seater is BYD’s most luxurious people mover yet, and quite possibly a preview of what could reach Malaysia soon.

The eMAX 9 DM-i runs on BYD’s Super DM-i plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system and comes in two variants: Advanced and Premium. Both pair a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a front-mounted electric motor, producing a combined 267 hp and 315 Nm of torque.
The Advanced variant’s 20.4 kWh Blade LFP battery offers up to 95 km of pure EV range, while the Premium’s larger 36.6 kWh pack extends that to 170 km. Total driving range exceeds 1,000 km, with 7 kW AC and DC fast charging support, 41 kW for the Advanced and 73 kW for the Premium.

In the Philippines, prices start at PHP 2.678 million (RM190,000) for the Advanced and PHP 2.998 million (RM216,000) for the Premium. That’s well below the Toyota Alphard, which typically sells for PHP 4–5 million (RM290,000–RM360,000), giving BYD a clear value advantage in the segment.
In essence, the eMAX 9 is BYD’s equivalent of the Alphard, while the Denza D9, from BYD’s premium sub-brand, aligns more closely with the Lexus LM. Both models share similar underpinnings, though the BYD-branded version targets a wider audience with a stronger emphasis on accessibility and value.

Inside, the eMAX 9 delivers full luxury. The Premium variant features power-adjustable captain seats with ventilation and massage, foldable tray tables, and a built-in refrigerator. A 15.6-inch touchscreen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with BYD Cloud Services, OTA updates, voice control, and onboard Wi-Fi.
At 5,145 mm long, 1,970 mm wide, and 1,805 mm tall, with a 3,045 mm wheelbase, the eMAX 9 matches the Alphard in presence and proportions but offers a far more accessible ownership cost.

Right-hand-drive availability has yet to be confirmed, but the timing of its debut is notable. With BYD set to establish its CKD plant in Tanjung Malim next year, models like the eMAX 9 DM-i could play a crucial role in sustaining production volumes and achieving faster returns on investment.
For any CKD operation to be viable, production needs to go beyond pure EVs. Established automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Honda maintain stable throughput by offering a balanced mix of internal combustion, hybrid, and electric models.

Even Chery Group, one of the newer entrants, follows the same playbook. Its CKD plants in Shah Alam and Kulim assemble across all powertrain types, a strategy successful enough to support its upcoming third facility in Lembah Beringin.
The same logic applies to BYD. With CBU EV incentives ending this year and CKD EV tax exemptions lasting only until 2027, automakers will need to diversify their offerings.

To achieve economies of scale, new entrants are expected to include hybrid and ICE models in their local mix, while also developing export programs across ASEAN.
If BYD follows that trajectory, the eMAX 9 DM-i could be among the hybrid models assembled locally alongside potentially the entry level BYD M6 EV MPV, supporting the brand’s regional ambitions and Malaysia’s shift toward a more balanced, electrified mobility landscape.
