VW Golf Faces Production Halt As China-Dutch Chip Dispute Disrupts Supply
The car industry could be heading for another chip crunch and this time, politics might be to blame.
Volkswagen is reportedly planning to pause production of its iconic Golf next week after supplies from major chipmaker Nexperia were suddenly disrupted.
The problem started when the Dutch government took control of Nexperia from its Chinese owner, Wingtech Technology, over national security concerns.

In response, China hit back by blocking exports of Nexperia chips made in its factories and now, European carmakers are feeling the impact.
Nexperia may not be a household name, but its microchips are everywhere like in airbags, sensors, power windows, and even door locks. It supplies brands like Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo, so when its shipments stall, production lines across Europe start to wobble.
Volkswagen says its plants are still running as planned, but admits things could change quickly if the situation drags on.

Reports suggest the Golf may be the first to take a hit, followed by other models like the Tiguan and Tayron if the supply freeze continues.
Industry groups are already sounding the alarm. Germany’s auto federation, the VDA, warned that if chip deliveries don’t resume soon, significant production restrictions or even a stop in production could follow.
Over in Japan, automakers including Toyota and Nissan have expressed concern too, calling the situation a serious threat to global car output.
While this might not turn into a repeat of the massive chip shortage during the pandemic, experts say it’s a wake-up call for carmakers that still rely heavily on single suppliers.

Modern cars use thousands of tiny semiconductors, from just a few dozen in the original Volkswagen Golf to nearly 10,000 in its latest version.
With the world’s biggest automakers now watching closely, the industry can only hope the latest tech tug-of-war doesn’t stall production once again.
