ECRL Trains Fully Assembled, Ready for Malaysia
The first batch of trains for Malaysia’s East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) is now ready in Dalian, China, bringing the project a step closer to reality. These include Electric Multiple Units for passengers and electric locomotives for freight.
The EMU trains are painted in blue and white with designs inspired by ocean waves and the local flora and fauna, reflecting the beauty of Malaysia’s East Coast.
The freight locomotives are equipped with advanced systems that monitor operations in milliseconds, keeping an eye on braking, fire suppression, and isolating any faulty components.
“The first EMU will undergo 8,000 kilometers of testing, while the next sets need 5,000 kilometers. Any issues reset the mileage
"There are two types of trains. The 160 km/h EMUs are mainly for passengers and the 80 km/h electric locomotives are primarily for freight,” said Zhang Jian, vice-president of CRRC Dalian.
The EMU trains have a dual-redundancy network control system that constantly checks key components including traction systems, high-voltage circuits, and auxiliary equipment to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Once delivered, the trains will operate along the 600-kilometer ECRL corridor, acting as a land bridge between Malaysia’s East and West Coasts.
