Massive Sinkhole Opens In Bayan Lepas, Road Closed For Safety
A large sinkhole opened up near SMK Sungai Ara in Bayan Lepas on Tuesday evening (Nov 4), forcing authorities to close part of Jalan Kenari and divert traffic for safety.
The sinkhole, located at the intersection of Jalan Datuk Ismail Hashim and Jalan Kenari, measures about 3.5 metres wide, 5 metres long, and nearly 2 metres deep.
The spot is right in front of the school and opposite KFC Desa Riang, a stretch known for heavy traffic during peak hours.
Thankfully, no one was hurt. Videos of the gaping hole quickly went viral, showing motorists slowing down and avoiding the damaged stretch.
Penang Infrastructure and Transport Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said his office was alerted soon after the incident and that the Public Works Department (JKR) immediately deployed a team to the site.
“The state Public Works Department team is currently heading to the location to carry out emergency mitigation works to ensure the safety of road users
The public is advised to be cautious and comply with the instructions of personnel on duty at the location,” he reminded.

Plastic barriers have since been placed around the sinkhole, while Jalan Kenari remains closed. Traffic is being redirected through Jalan Sungai Ara 1, Jalan Persiaran Relau, and Jalan Kedidi.
Zairil added that the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) and Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) have been asked to inspect underground assets to identify possible causes.
“The actual cause of the sinkhole will still require a detailed study,” he said, thanking the public for their patience.

Authorities say safety remains the top priority and updates will be shared once investigations are complete.
