KLIA T1 Moves Customs Checks — Here’s What You Need To Know

Customs checks for travellers leaving Malaysia will be relocated to the departure gates at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 from Jan 1, as part of efforts to improve passenger flow.
At present, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department carries out inspections using departure screening scanners positioned after Immigration clearance. Authorities say this arrangement can contribute to congestion, particularly during peak travel periods.
The Transport Ministry said the revised setup is designed to create a smoother pre-boarding experience, reducing queues and easing crowding in the departure zone.

The change follows close coordination between the ministry, Customs, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA).
The ministry stressed that security and enforcement standards will not be relaxed. Customs inspections of passengers and goods will continue under strengthened operational coordination and agreed procedures.
It added that the move is expected to enhance passenger comfort, speed up boarding and ensure KLIA Terminal 1 operates in a more efficient, orderly and safe manner, in line with international airport practices.
Authorities also warned that travellers attempting to take prohibited or undeclared items out of the country will continue to face firm enforcement action.
