Proton Exploring CKD and Local Partnerships in Algeria
![]()
Proton is assessing a potential move into Algeria, as the national carmaker looks to tap into North Africa’s expanding automotive market and strengthen its international presence.
The company is understood to be exploring local partnerships that could begin with dealership operations, before advancing into vehicle assembly using semi-knocked-down (SKD) and completely knocked-down (CKD) kits. The approach would align closely with Algeria’s efforts to rebuild its domestic auto manufacturing sector.

Malaysia’s Ambassador to Algeria, Datuk Rizany Irwan Muhamad Mazlan, said Proton is currently evaluating manufacturing investments and partnership opportunities within the country.
As part of this process, Proton’s regional manager for North Africa, Muhamad Azwan Muhamad Nor, has made recent visits to engage with local industry players and assess market readiness.

With a large population and long-standing supply constraints in the vehicle market, Algeria presents a sizable opportunity. Annual demand is estimated at around one million vehicles, supported by government policies that favour local production over fully imported models.
The potential Algeria expansion comes as Proton records strong momentum in its export business. In 2025, the company achieved its highest export volume since 2012, representing a 26% increase compared to the previous year.

While newer models such as the e.MAS 7 feature in Proton’s export portfolio, volume growth continues to be driven by established nameplates. The Saga and X50 recorded export volumes of 3,109 units and 1,747 units respectively during the year.
Proton has also continued to add new destinations to its export map, with Mauritius announced as its latest market in Oct 2025, highlighting the brand’s broader push to scale up its global operations.
