Genting "Toll" Starts May 28, But Here Is Why Malaysian Bikers Are Celebrating The New Rules

The new Genting Highlands entry toll starts at RM3.30 (Photo: NSTP)
Beginning this Thursday, May 28, motorists traveling up to Genting Highlands will officially have to pay a new private road charge.
The announcement was made by Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd (LCSB), the authorized operator for the 24km stretch of Jalan Genting Highlands. Payments will be collected at the two main access checkpoints: the Genting Sempah entry point and the Gohtong Jaya roundabout.
But while car owners are collectively crying over their Touch 'n Go balances, there is one group of road users grinning from ear to ear under their helmets: Malaysian bikers.
Here is the full breakdown of the new Genting road charges, and why the two-wheeled community just scored the ultimate victory:
1. The Ultimate Flex: Total Exemption (No Forms Needed!)
While almost every single vehicle class is being hit with a fee, motorcycles are completely exempt from the charges. And here is the best part, bikers don't even need to fill out any annoying online registration forms, download new apps, or queue up for special tags.
You can just cruise right past the gantries through your usual lanes without spending a single sen. Whether you're a delivery rider bringing up food or a superbiker on a weekend corner-carving session, the mountain remains your free playground!
2. The Heavy Damage: What Car Drivers Have To Pay

If you're rolling up the mountain on four wheels, you’ll need to make sure your digital e-wallets, debit cards, or credit cards are loaded. Under the Phase 1 rollout starting May 28, here is what the "Genting Tax" looks like per entry:
3. High-Tech Enforcement: The LPR Scanners Are Watching
To keep traffic moving smoothly without massive holiday bottlenecks, the operator is leaning heavily into digital automation. Commercial vehicles, buses, and taxis (Classes 2 to 5) are required to use designated "Lorong Khas" special lanes or pass under the new Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) camera systems. The system will automatically scan your plate to handle access, meaning your old-school card-tapping struggles are about to go high-tech.
4. The Free Pass For The Hill’s Real Heroes
It’s not just bikers getting a break. Private vehicles belonging to public servants who are actively working at designated government institutions up on the mountain get a full pass.
This covers the staff at the Genting and Gohtong Jaya police stations, the local bomba crew, clinics, district offices, and schools like SK and SMK Sri Layang. They just need to register their vehicles beforehand to trigger the LPR scanners.
5. Phase 2: Perks For The "Permanent Residents"
Beginning June 28, the second phase kicks in with a preferential scheme for permanent residents of Genting Highlands. Households can register up to two Class 1 vehicles to score a 10% discount per entry.
Alternatively, frequent local commuters can subscribe to a six-month unlimited season pass for RM900, giving them endless access via the special LPR lanes. To make the transition easier, registered resident vehicles won't be charged a single sen prior to June 28!
Why is this happening now?

According to the operators, this isn’t a standard highway toll, it's a private road charge based on a "user pays" model. Maintaining a 24km mountain pass is an engineering nightmare, and the collected fees will go directly toward massive long-term upkeep costs, including road resurfacing, slope stabilization, drainage improvements, and emergency landslide monitoring.
So, if you're a car owner planning a chilly escape this weekend, remember to factor an extra RM5 into your road trip budget. But if you own a motorcycle? Grab your jacket, strap on your helmet, and enjoy the free ride!
