Is Your EV Charger Safe? JKR Just Released The First-Ever Official Manual To Stop 'Dodgy' Installations

The Ministry of Works (KKR) and Public Works Department (JKR) just launched the first-ever Design and Installation Guidelines for Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Systems during the 2026 Senior Officers' Conference (SOC).
Here is why this "boring" government manual is actually a huge win for every EV driver in Malaysia.
1. The Missing Piece of the Puzzle
While Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST) has long regulated the electrical safety and licensing of chargers, JKR’s new manual is the first to standardize the actual civil design and placement on our public road networks.

Before this, there was no specific national blueprint for how a charging station should physically sit on federal or state land. This often meant contractors and operators were working off different sets of rules for site layout.
JKR’s new guidelines now serve as the definitive "design book" to ensure every installation is safe, accessible, and professionally built. Whether it’s at a petrol station or a municipal parking lot, the "dodgy" installation days are numbered.
2. Coming Soon To a 'Jalan Persekutuan' Near You

One of the biggest takeaways from Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan is the shift in focus. Currently, chargers are clumped together at highway R&Rs. The new initiative aims to expand charging infrastructure to federal, state, and municipal roads under JKR’s supervision. This means your favorite trunk roads through Pahang or Perak are finally getting the infrastructure they need to make "Balik Kampung" in an EV a stress-free reality.
3. It’s Not Just for Cars

In a move towards true green mobility, the Ministry emphasized that these guidelines aren't just for luxury EV sedans. The plan specifically includes provisions for electric motorcycles and buses. By standardizing how these chargers are built, the government is making it easier for the "rakyat" to switch to electric, regardless of their vehicle type.
4. JKR is Becoming a "Facilitator," Not Just a Gatekeeper

Traditionally, getting approvals for infrastructure can be a headache. However, JKR is positioning itself as a proactive facilitator. By providing a clear "design book," they are making it easier for private companies and individuals to set up charging spots legally and safely. If you’ve been thinking of installing a charger for your business, this book is basically your new "cheat code."
A Major Step for Malaysia’s EV Roadmap
The lack of charging stations has long been identified as the main barrier to EV adoption in Malaysia. By releasing these guidelines, JKR isn't just building chargers; they are building trust. When you know that a charger has been installed according to a national safety manual, that range anxiety starts to disappear.
Are you ready to take your EV off the highway and onto the federal roads? Let us know which "old road" route needs a charger the most!
