MITI Dropped New EV Rules, But BYD Says "We're Not Going Anywhere"

If you’ve been scrolling through automotive news lately, you might have seen some "scary" headlines about Malaysia’s new EV policies. With MITI introducing strict regulations that could effectively "outlaw" or drive up the price of popular imported EVs, many fans were worried: Is BYD packing its bags?
The short answer? Not a chance.

At the grand opening of the stunning BYD Mansion Macalister in Penang, BYD Vice President Liu Xueliang made it crystal clear: the carmaker remains 100% committed to the Malaysian market, regardless of the policy shifts.
The "Bombshell" Rules Explained
To understand why BYD’s commitment is such a big deal, we have to look at what MITI recently dropped. The new regulations for fully-imported (CBU) EVs essentially say:
- The Power Cap: Imported EVs must produce at least 180 kW (245 PS).
- The Price Floor: If they don’t hit that power cap, the CIF (cost, insurance, and freight) must be at least RM200k.
For BYD’s current lineup, this is a massive hurdle. Popular models like the Dolphin and Atto 3 don't hit that 180 kW mark, which means they could become much harder (or more expensive) to bring in.

BYD’s Secret Weapon: "Wisdom and Spirit"
Instead of hitting the panic button, Liu Xueliang took a diplomatic, and confident approach. "As a responsible technology company, we will continue to bring our best technologies and products to Malaysia," he said during his speech.

He noted that BYD is already working closely with the Malaysian government and local partners to find "the most suitable NEV development solutions." Whether that means speeding up local assembly (CKD) or adjusting their product lineup, BYD is treating this as a "chess match" they intend to win.
East Malaysia, You’re Next!
Good news for our friends in Sabah and Sarawak! Liu has confirmed that East Malaysia is a top priority after seeing the huge demand for electric mobility during his visit to Borneo. He has officially "made a promise" to bring the brand's latest innovations across the pond. Whether you're in KK or Kuching, the wait for official tech is almost over!
A Showroom That’s Actually a "Mansion"
BYD isn't just fighting with policy; they’re winning on vibes too. The new BYD Mansion Macalister is proof of their long-term investment. By turning a century-old heritage building into a high-tech showroom, they’re blending Penang’s history with the future of transport. It’s not just a place to buy a car; it’s a statement that they are part of the Malaysian fabric now.
