5 Mind-Blowing Facts About Proton's Massive 2026 Sales Explosion You Probably Missed

Proton just dropped its official report card for the first half of 2026, and the numbers are absolute madness. The national carmaker shifted a whopping 16,052 vehicles in June alone, pushing their year-to-date (YTD) total past a major milestone.
Skip the dry corporate press releases. Here are 5 eye-opening facts from Proton's mid-year results that show exactly how Malaysians are spending their money right now:
1. Malaysians are buying cars at a 15-year record high
Let’s bust the myth that nobody is buying big-ticket items. Proton has officially delivered 100,346 units in the first six months of 2026. Not only is this a massive 39.1% jump compared to the same period last year, but it is also Proton’s best first-half sales performance since 2011. They are now officially halfway to meeting their wild annual target of 200,000 cars by December.
2. Proton Saga is single-handedly carrying the brand on its back

While sleek SUVs get all the TikTok hype, the humble Proton Saga remains the undisputed, hard-working pillar of the brand. Saga MC3 shifted 7,000 units in June, bringing its 6-month total to an incredible 44,375 units (a 40% explosion from last year). To put that into perspective, nearly half of all Protons sold this year are Sagas. In this economy, the ultimate affordable survival car is still the king of the road.
3. Plot twist: Proton is silently dominating the local EV charts

When you think of electric vehicles in Malaysia, trendy international brands usually come to mind. But look at the data: Proton's electrified eMas range recorded 17,920 deliveries in the first six months, a staggering 321% increase year-on-year! In fact, the locally assembled eMas 5 is currently Malaysia's top-selling EV with 10,793 units sold so far.

4. The new eMas 7 PHEV is the ultimate "fuel subsidy shield"
With fuel subsidy rationalisation weighing heavily on everyone's minds, local buyers are finding a sweet spot. The eMas 7 PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid) has maintained a strong streak, exceeding 1,000 deliveries for the third consecutive month (1,138 units in June). Since launching in February, it has locked in 4,074 sales, proving that Malaysians want EV fuel savings but aren't quite ready to give up the backup safety of a petrol tank.
5. Wait... Where on earth did the Proton X70 go?

Here is a little industry mystery for the sharp-eyed observers: Proton explicitly detailed the sales data for the Saga, S70, X50, X90, and the entire eMas lineup, but completely omitted the specific numbers for the X70 SUV for the past few months. Don't worry, it hasn't been discontinued; external JPJ registration data shows over 400 units were registered locally in May, but Proton is keeping its official report card focus firmly on its newer heroes.
What the bosses say: "Surpassing 100,000 sales before the halfway point of the year reflects the confidence Malaysians continue to place in our brand," said Proton Deputy CEO Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa. "Demand remains strong for our ICE models while eMas continues to expand rapidly."
