The New Jaecoo J5 EV Is Literally Built For Your Cat—And Malaysia Is Getting Better Specs Than Thailand!

Omoda & Jaecoo Malaysia has just pulled the wraps off the highly anticipated Jaecoo J5 EV at the Oh My Meow Expo 2026. To prove just how serious they are about the whole "pet-friendly" vibe, the preview unit on display was literally decked out in cat ears, a nose, whiskers, and a tail.
Malaysia Scores the Superior Euro-Spec Battery Pack

While the J5 EV shares the same punchy front-mounted electric motor across Southeast Asia, pushing out 155 kW and 288 Nm of torque, the way it stores that power varies heavily by country. And this is where Malaysia scores a massive victory.
Unlike its ASEAN counterparts, Malaysia's version is equipped with a premium 58.9 kWh CATL LFP battery, a setup shared with luxury-focused markets like Europe and Australia.
When you look at the regional scoreboard, the difference is night and day:
- Thailand: The locally-assembled Thai model gets a downgraded 50.6 kWh battery, restricting its real-world driving range.
- Malaysia: Our 58.9 kWh CATL pack grants a highly usable 402 km WLTP-rated range, letting you drive much further than the Thai version (which lands at a lesser 340 km WLTP equivalent).
- Indonesia: Holds the top capacity spot at 60.9 kWh via a local Gotion pack, though Malaysia’s range efficiency remains fiercely competitive.

When it’s time to juice up, the J5 EV supports an impressive 130 kW of DC fast charging, allowing you to blast from 30% to 80% battery capacity in just 28 minutes. It also features a handy vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, meaning you can plug in external electronic appliances right from the car's power port.
A Car Interior Crafted for Destructive Claws

If you’ve ever had your car’s leather seats shredded by an anxious cat or dog, Jaecoo has built the ultimate solution.
The J5 EV retains its ultra-rugged, globally TÜV-certified faux leather upholstery. Not only is it low-VOC (meaning no toxic chemical smells for sensitive pet noses), but it is explicitly anti-bacterial and scratch-resistant. For the EV variant, the cabin gets a slick visual upgrade with distinctive blue piping and stitching.

This model also features a brilliant Pet Mode, which keeps the air conditioning running securely to maintain a cool cabin temperature if you have to step away and leave your fur-babies inside the locked vehicle.
The practical layout remains uncompromised, offering a solid 480-litre rear boot alongside a new 35-litre front boot (frunk) where the petrol engine used to live, perfect for stashing extra bags of kibble or pet carriers.
Luxury Vibe On A Budget: That Premium "Range Rover-Lite" Design

On the outside, the J5 EV keeps its handsome, boxy "Range Rover" design language but throws in a few clean electric styling cues. You get a unique closed-off front fascia with an active air shutter, a sharp body-colored lower section, a dedicated BEV badge, and aerodynamic two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels.

The interior is a minimalist haven dominated by a massive 13.2-inch portrait infotainment touchscreen and a glorious 1.45 square-meter panoramic glass roof that floods the cabin with natural light. It's packed with top-tier creature comforts like ventilated power seats, a 50W wireless phone charger, a 360-degree camera with a "transparent chassis" function, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Top-Tier Safety to Protect the Whole Family
Arriving in Malaysia as a locally assembled (CKD) model later this year, the J5 EV doesn't skimp on electronic defense. It carries over a heavy safety suite, including six airbags and a dense array of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS):
- Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
- Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go functionality
- Lane Centring Assist & Evasive Steering Assist
- Blind Spot Monitoring with active Collision Prevention
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Auto Brake
While official pricing remains under wraps for now, the J5 EV is shaping up to be an absolute lifestyle disrupter for Malaysian pet parents who want premium tech, solid range, and a cabin that can survive the ultimate claw tests.
