Driving Up North In An EV? There's A New 240 kW Charger At Rawang R&R

Driving up north from the Klang Valley in an EV? There's now another high-powered charging stop you can make before getting too far along the PLUS highway.

TNB Electron has activated its new DC charging station at R&R Rawang Northbound, offering up to 240 kW DC charging across two charging bays. The site officially goes live today, 28 Sept 2026.

Better yet, early users won't have to pay to try it.

Free Charging Until 29 Sept

TNB Electron is running a free operational testing period from 12 PM today (28 Sept) until 11:59 PM on 29 Sept. Once that ends, charging will cost RM1.50 per kWh. The station uses a single Autel DC charger serving two charging bays, configured to deliver up to 240 kW.

There's also an integrated JuiceUp card payment terminal, so users can make payment directly at the charger. Of course, how much charging power your EV actually pulls will depend on the vehicle's own DC charging capability and other conditions.

Rawang Has Actually Been On TNB's List Since 2023

What's interesting is that Rawang isn't exactly a new location in TNB Electron's plans. Back in February 2023, TNB identified R&R Rawang Northbound as one of six additional Electron locations being developed after its first highway chargers were rolled out. The other locations named at the time included Machap Southbound, Gunung Semanggol Southbound, Gurun Northbound and Southbound, and Paka Southbound.

At the time, TNB said these additional locations were expected to be completed within 2023. That timeline didn't materialise.

In October 2023, Carz reported that the six planned stations had faced delays, with TNB indicating that they were then expected to be operational by March 2024 due to land-related issues.

Rawang Northbound ultimately took considerably longer. Construction at the site reportedly began in late 2025 based on photos published on PlugShare, before the new 240 kW facility finally opened in September 2026.

So yes, this particular charging location has been a long time coming.

A Much Faster Charger Than TNB Electron Started With

TNB Electron's highway charging network has also evolved quite a bit since those early days. When TNB opened its pilot Electron charging points at R&R Ayer Keroh Northbound and R&R Paka Northbound in January 2023, both initially featured 2 x 90 kW DC chargers. Tapah Northbound followed in February 2023, also with a 2 x 90 kW setup.

Fast-forward to today and the Rawang Northbound facility is configured for up to 240 kW, making it a much more capable stop for newer EVs that can take advantage of higher DC charging rates.

More importantly, its location should prove useful for EV drivers starting their northbound journey from Greater Kuala Lumpur. So if you're heading north over the next two days, the timing isn't bad either. You can give the new Rawang charger a try while charging is still free.
