Mitsubishi Triton

One of Mitsubishi’s highly sought-after 4x4 models, the new Mitsubishi Triton, upgraded and launched in Malaysia.

A sixth-generation pick-up truck, underpinned is a MEGAFRAME chassis (ladder-frame) and two body configurations (single cab, double cab).

Fully imported (CBU – Thailand), available via Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) are five variants (M/T Single Cab, M/T GL, A/T GL, A/T Premium, A/T Athlete).

Included is a standard warranty (five years/200,000 KM – M/T Single Cab/five years, unlimited mileage – M/T GL, A/T GL, A/T Premium, A/T Athlete).

The new Triton adopts a ‘Horizontal Axis’ design, featuring a geometrically tiered dashboard, linked to a low-rising centre console (drive mode rotary, wireless charger).

Hard-touch (M/T Single Cab) and soft-/hard-touch (M/T GL, A/T GL, A/T Premium, A/T Athlete) panelled (dash, centre console, steering wheel, door cards), it sees a single-tone (Black) colour scheme with contrast trimmings (Silver: M/T Single Cab, M/T GL, A/T GL, A/T Premium, A/T Athlete – Orange stitching: A/T Athlete).

Courtesy of the ‘Beast Mode’ styling, it exudes a robustly smooth, solidly stocky and athletically blocky exterior, emphasised by horizontally aligned and cleanly cut contours.

Features are Daytime Running Lights (LED – DRL: A/T Premium, A/T Athlete), automatic On/Off, manual levelling, Automatic High Beam (AHB – A/T Premium, A/T Athlete), welcome lights and turn signals.

The side mirrors (Black: M/T Single Cab, M/T GL, A/T GL – Chrome: A/T Premium – Gloss Black: A/T Athlete) are electric-powered (auto-fold: A/T Premium, A/T Athlete – adjust: M/T GL, A/T GL, A/T Premium, A/T Athlete).

The new Triton features the following suites (Mitsubishi Motors Safety Sensing – MMSS: A/T Premium, A/T Athlete) of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Standard systems (M/T Single Cab, M/T GL, A/T GL, A/T Premium, A/T Athlete) include Emergency Stop Signal System (ESS), Brake Override System (BOS), Active Limited Slip Differential (Brake Control), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Active Stability Control (ASC), Hill-Start Assist (HSA) and Trailer Stability Assist (TSA).

Variant-specific systems (A/T Premium, A/T Athlete) include Hill Descent Control (HDC), Forward Collision Mitigation System (FCM) with Warning/Braking Function, Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Change Alert (LCA), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Automatic High Beam (AHB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC – A/T Athlete), Active Yaw Control (AYC – A/T Athlete) and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS – A/T Athlete).

Installed central displays (infotainment) are a standard 2-DIN unit (Bluetooth, microphone: M/T Single Cab – USB, Bluetooth, MP3, microphone: M/T GL, A/T GL) and an 8.0-Inch touchscreen unit (USB, Bluetooth, MP3, microphone, voice command, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto: A/T Premium, A/T Athlete).

Entertainment is channelled via variant-specific setups (two speakers: M/T Single Cab, four speakers: M/T GL, A/T GL – six speakers: A/T Premium, A/T Athlete).

Nestled in the new Triton are variant-specific powertrain setups.

First setup (M/T Single Cab, M/T GL, A/T GL, A/T Premium) is a 2.4-Litre in-line four-cylinder 16-valve DOHC turbo diesel (Euro 4) engine (4N16), producing 181 HP (135 KW) and 430 NM.

Second setup (A/T Athlete) is a 2.4-Litre in-line four-cylinder 16-valve DOHC MIVEC two-stage turbodiesel (Euro 5) engine (4N16), producing 201 HP (150 KW) and 470 NM.

Mated to the setups are six-speed manual (M/T Single Cab, M/T GL) and six-speed automatic (A/T GL, A/T Premium, A/T Athlete) transmissions.

Power is transmitted to all four wheels (M/T Single Cab, M/T GL, A/T GL, A/T Premium, A/T Athlete), via a Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) system. 

Incorporated systems are Easy Select 4WD (M/T Single Cab, M/T GL, A/T GL, A/T Premium), Super Select II 4WD (A/T Athlete) and Active Limited Slip Differential (Brake Control).

Installed is a manual single-zone air-conditioning system (M/T Single Cab, M/T GL, A/T GL) and a dual-zone automatic climate control system (A/T Premium, A/T Athlete) with rear-vents.

Coming with a robustly tuned suspension system, it provides an overall greater confidence on the road, especially when taking corners. 

The suspension sees a setup of double wishbones with coil springs and stabiliser bars (front), and elliptical leaf springs (rear).

Elsewhere, it is firm, safe, and the seats are supportive and well-bolstered, offering a comfortably sporty driving dynamic for all that all-terrain needs.

Good sound insulation, covering all the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects. No abnormal wind issues at any speed.

The new Mitsubishi Triton offers an all-rounder appeal with its commanding demeanour and robustly comfortable interior.

Performance-wise, its multiple powertrain setups offer a dynamic and an engaging drive, and the suite of ADAS is a bonus.

Ultimately, the new Triton is satisfactory, a well-blended four-wheeler, combining design, performance and practicality.
